Lymphedema  Therapy

Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling in a body part, most commonly in the arms or legs. It can also affect the head, neck, breast, or genitals, often as a result of cancer treatments. This swelling occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to efficiently drain fluid.

Common Triggers of Lymphedema

  • Infection, including cellulitis (a serious bacterial skin infection)

  • Genetic predisposition present at birth or developing later in life

  • Obesity

  • Radiation treatments

  • Surgical procedures, particularly those related to cancer

  • Traumatic injury

  • Venous insufficiency (impaired blood flow back to the heart)

Symptoms of Lymphedema

  • Swelling that limits movement

  • A feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the affected area

  • Recurring infections or slow-healing wounds

  • Skin that becomes thick or hardened

  • Persistent swelling that doesn’t subside with elevation

How Lymphedema Therapy Helps

Lymphedema therapy aims to reduce swelling by promoting proper lymphatic fluid drainage. It can also help prevent worsening symptoms and support a faster recovery.

Specialized physical and occupational therapists offer expert care to effectively manage lymphedema at many Aurora locations.
